Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

The field of geographic information systems (GIS) is constantly evolving as an emerging technology. Members of the geographic information community have witnessed this technology evolve from command line, workstation-based software to tools that can now be used in the cloud and via mobile devices over a twenty-year period.

GIS is a technological field that uses geographical features and tabular data to map, analyze, and evaluate real-world problems.

This technology's key word is geography, which means that some of the data is spatial. This means that the data is linked to specific locations on the planet. This data is usually accompanied by tabular data known as attribute data.
